Lake Tahoe in winter is full of skiing, ice skating, and snowboarding fun. There’s also hiking and snowmobiling the area’s snowy trails. Or, maybe a cozy sleigh ride, where the only energy you exert is sipping cocoa while you sit back and enjoy the scenery, sounds more appealing. Book a stay in one of the fabulous rental cottages at Tahoe Valley Campground and enjoy the wonderful wooded wonderland that is Lake Tahoe in winter!
Start the day off right and head up to Emerald Bay State Park to catch the sunrise (January’s average sunrise is roughly 7:15 a.m. and February’s is roughly 6:45 a.m.) Park near Eagle Falls, just off Highway 89, and get ready for the show as the sun rises over the lake.
Since you’re up, take a drive into the historic town of Truckee. This tiny, yet charming, town has art galleries, clothing and home décor shops, bookstores and a variety of places to grab a bite. Truckee, named for a Paiute Indian chief, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is rich with history. A walking tour of the town provides a great lesson – a map for the tour can be found at truckee.com.
Take advantage of all the snow and hit the slopes while you’re here. And, if you’re not a seasoned skier, take a lesson and see what you can do. The Heavenly Ski Resort offers lessons in both skiing and snowboarding. The resort also offers a very scenic way to see the beauty of the area – a gondola ride. The 2.4-mile trip provides breathtaking views of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Get your camera ready as a stop at the observation deck brings plenty of photo ops.
