Julian, CA, is a historic gold mining town nestled among the forests between Volcan Mountain and the north end of the Cuyamaca Range, about one hour east of San Diego. The town is known for its four distinct seasons including a fall and winter, which are ideal conditions for growing their famous Julian apples. Just one visit here and you’ll fall in love with the fresh air, mountain views, the quaint charm of this historic city, and the apple pie.
The city of Julian hosts a number of events throughout the year to celebrate its long history of growing apples and gold mining. This year, catch the two-day celebration, Julian Apple Days Festival, Sept 23-24 at the Menghini Winery. There will be music, dancing, children’s activities, a beer and wine garden, contests and, of course, apple pie. Admission is $5 for adults, and children 12 and under are free!
Also in September is the 21st Annual Julian Grape Stomp Festa on Sept. 2 at the Menghini Winery. Ticket holders come to the Stomp Festa to roll up their pants, kick off their shoes, and stomp grapes! Join hundreds of others to step into a giant vat of grapes, squishing your toes in juicy grapes to make wine. No, the wine isn’t distributed to anyone afterward, but it’s a great way to have fun for only $15!
