Spring Cleaning

In a small space, it’s easy to start feeling like you’re living on a pile of stuff. With spring just around the corner (March 20!), many people will start feeling the itch to ditch, especially if your space is small. Plus, once the sun is out every day and the days begin to get longer, taking a day Whether you’re reading this from a tiny house, or a mansion, these spring cleaning tips will help you get started on de-cluttering and welcoming the new season with a clean home!

Every thing needs a place and a purpose.

When you’re living small, all space is valuable. Things resting on the floor hides dirt and limit the free movement space around your home. Take a cue from the Tiny Houses at Mt. Hood Village RV Resort, designed by Tumbleweed. Tumbleweed is known for their clever designs that make tiny house living easy-as-pie. They’ve incorporated storage into the ladders that lead to lofted beds, installed tables that pull-down from the walls, and utilize the space above your head in the kitchen to hang useful kitchen tools.

Consider hanging things above you and in places that make sense will help you declutter and open up your small space without knocking down any walls. Hang a drying rack from your bathroom door to dry clothes or wet bathing suits. Take advantage of the space underneath your bed by adding slim storage containers that are filled with out-of-season clothes or equipment. Hanging hooks are your friends. Want more greenery in your home but don’t want to take up valuable table space to set a vase? Install a small towel bar in the room you’d like more plants and add hanging planters.

Does this thing bring a smile to your face?

In other words, does it bring you joy? In her best-selling book, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, Marie Kondo explains, in depth, the Japanese philosophy that all things in our lives should have a purpose and bring us joy. Even if you haven’t read the book, there’s a lot to take away from this idea. If you’re in the middle of spring cleaning, take a moment for some of the items that you aren’t sure about it and ask yourself if it has a purpose and if it brings you a joy. If it hits both these two points, keep it. If not, consider donating it or tossing it.
