The end of summer is in the air, and crisper weather is soon to come your way. This means one thing: football season is fast approaching! Break out the chips and dip, tailgating tables and team colors. Dust off your comfiest outdoor chair and lace up your most durable tennis shoes. Get a little closer to the action this year. Don’t have 100 yards of open space readily available for an impromptu game? Try out one of these variations for some fall fun.
Flag Football: Looking for a version of the game that won’t leave you feeling like you’ve been sacked? Give flag football a try. In this variation of the popular American game, players wear a flag belt. While the main rules are the same as tackle football, this game involves no tackling. Instead, players try to tear off their opponents flag to show that he has been “tackled.” Field sizes for flag football range from full NFL size to a third of a standard football field.
Paper Football: Also known as finger football and flick football, this variation can be played in the comfort of your own home, with minimal supplies. All you need is a piece of paper, folded into a small triangle, and your hands! Clear off a table and get ready for kickoff. The game begins as soon as one player does a kickoff by holding the tip of the paper football with the fingertip of one hand and flicking it across the table with the other. The opposing team gains possession where the football lands, and advances the ball by flicking, as well. Touchdowns are worth six points. Don’t worry, there is still a way to gain that extra point. The opposing team member holds his or her hands in a goalpost position, while the other team “kicks.” Be fair, though – no moving the goalpost!
Nerf Football: If you’re organizing a game and including a camper whose age is still a single digit, Nerf football may be your best bet. The softness of the ball makes catching a less daunting experience, as it is crafted from foam. Additionally, Nerf offers a variety of toys, many of which are best suited for smaller hands. Make your pickup game one the entire family can enjoy with a Nerf ball. In Nerf football, the field can be the size you want it to be (or whatever is available).
